or pick up the pieces later." Oregon State Geologist, Don Hull National Geographic Magazine, May 1997 Bob Linse has been working with manufactured housing since 1967. His hands-on experience with sales, service and construction in Oregon and Washington began before state safety certification for earthquake resistant foundations. Bob founded Advanced Foundations Systems so he could implement a few simple - but very effective - improvements to foundation design. Beginning in 1970, Bob saw earthquake destruction up close, as he worked on cleanup following several major California earthquakes. From close observation of damages manufactured homes, he came to understand the need for much stronger foundations. The 1997 Uniform Building Code was written by engineers who had come to the same conclusion as Mr. Linse. The 1997 Code included upgrades and modifications requiring stronger attachments and greater vertical and horizontal load capacity for manufactured homes. The goal was to make manufactured home, and the people in them, safer and less likely to suffer catastrophic damage. The first-generation implementation of "Advanced Foundation Systems" produced dramatic benefits during the Loma Preita and Northridge earthquakes of 1989 and 1994. Because of foundation design improvements, the majority of these manufactured homes required only minor repositioning of piers and blocks, and leveling. Not a single family using the Advanced Foundation System was displaced while these adjustments were made! By contrast, many of their neighbors were out of their homes for months, and had to spend thousands of dollars to repair damaged homes and foundations. Bob continues to improve his designs. Stands in Advanced Foundation Systems II and III now test over twice the rated strength. And the concrete pads in the latest systems test over 5 times the rated strength of the first generation. Earthquake planning is coming to Oregon and Washington! Many cities in the Pacific Northwest are being upgraded to Seismic Zone 3 & 4...and will require earthquake resistant bracing in the near future. Advanced Foundation Systems are thoroughly safety-tested and certified by the State of California for use in Seismic Zone 4. And Advanced Foundation Systems are already proven effective in protecting manufactured homes during California earthquakes.
